Kathie encourages parents to help their children love to read rather than learn to read. She urges parents to leave the 'tough stuff' to the teachers and instead focus their attention on celebrating what their children can do. Kathie will suggest easy-to-do ideas for parents to help build their child's confidence and their love for reading!

What Administrators Need to Know About Balanced Literacy and Guided Reading

This administrative workshop is designed as an introduction to Guided Reading. This workshop will be tailored to the unique, individual needs of the participants. In this interactive session, principals will generate questions they have about Balanced Literacy and Guided Reading. This half day session will then address those specific areas.

Areas of focus can include:
  • The components that make up Balanced Literacy - definitions, advantages and limitations of each
  • What authentic Guided Reading is, what it is not, and how to tell the difference
  • What teachers' biggest concerns are and how to address them
  • What an effective Guided Reading lesson should include
  • How and where Guided Reading fits across the K-5 span
  • What administrators should see in a Balanced Literacy/Guided Reading classroom
  • Suggestions to support staff in implementing a quality Balanced Literacy curriculum
  • Various Guided Reading materials and criteria for determining good quality materials
  • Assessment and properly matching materials to students' needs
  • A checklist for observing/evaluating a Guided Reading lesson
