Day 2 Introduction to Guided Reading with Emergent Readers

  • What Guided Reading is and what it's not
  • Identifying those students who are ready for Guided Reading
  • Matching materials to students' needs
  • Watching a Guided Reading demonstration lesson
  • Doing a Guided Reading lesson step-by-step
  • Integrating the skills and phonics
  • Making running records doable



Day 3 Guiding Reading with Emergent Readers


  • Management-'What's everyone else in class doing?'
  • Planning the questioning and strategy coaching
  • Practicing a Guided Reading lesson
  • Returning to the same book - a three-day plan
  • Making the writing connection - hands-on writing responses to emergent level books
  • Establishing literacy-based centers
  • Making running records doable


Day 4 Guided Reading with Early Readers

  • Keeping Guided Reading groups flexible
  • Planning the questioning for an early Guided Reading lesson
  • Using Nonfiction with early readers
  • Incorporating early Guided Writing responses and extension activities
  • Transitioning into silent reading
  • Coaching comprehension strategies
  • Another look at running records


Day 5 Guided Reading with Intermediate/Fluent Readers

  • Shared Reading with Intermediate Readers
  • Identifying good quality Guided Reading materials
  • Matching older readers to appropriate leveled materials
